Methodology

matchex provides sports economy data and analysis for 268+ public and private sports companies. This page explains how we select our universe, calculate Sports Focus scores, source sports economy data, and maintain data quality.

Universe Selection

The matchex universe comprises 268+ public and private companies with meaningful sports revenue exposure. Public companies span over 40 exchanges worldwide. We maintain two tiers:

Index Universe

Core companies with direct, significant sports revenue. These are the pure-play and major sports-linked equities — publicly traded sports teams, major broadcasters, leading apparel brands, and dedicated sports technology firms.

Extended Universe

Companies with partial or indirect sports revenue. These include diversified conglomerates where sports is one of several business segments, as well as supply chain and infrastructure providers.

Companies are reviewed quarterly and may be added or removed based on changes in revenue composition, M&A activity, or IPOs/delistings. Each company is assigned to one of 12 sub-themes that map the complete sports economy value chain.

Sports Focus (0–100)

Sports Focus measures the percentage of a company's revenue attributable to sports-related products and services. A Sports Focus of 85 means approximately 85% of the company's revenue derives from sports. This metric helps investors quickly assess how pure-play a sports investment opportunity is — a company with 90%+ Sports Focus is a direct sports bet; a company with 20% Sports Focus offers incidental exposure.

Sports Focus scores range from 0 (no sports revenue) to 100 (pure-play sports company). They are based on public filings, earnings reports, and Matchex research, reviewed annually and updated when material revenue changes occur — such as a new media rights deal, a divestiture, or a significant shift in business mix.

Score Interpretation

80–100
Pure-play sports company with dominant revenue from sports
50–79
Significant sports exposure alongside other business lines
0–49
Diversified company with partial sports involvement

Sports Focus scores are reviewed when new annual filings are available, typically following each company's fiscal year-end report. Material mid-year changes (acquisitions, divestitures) may trigger an interim update.

Data Integrity & Limitations

matchex strives for accuracy but users should be aware of inherent limitations in financial data:

  • Market data is end-of-day (EOD) and not suitable for intraday trading decisions
  • Sports Focus scores are subjective assessments based on publicly available information and may not reflect private or undisclosed revenue breakdowns
  • Company fundamentals depend on the reporting schedule of each company and may lag by up to one quarter
  • News headlines are aggregated from third-party sources and matchex does not independently verify the accuracy of source reporting
  • matchex is a data and research platform — it does not provide investment advice or recommendations
